What is an African ‘BOMA’?

Posted on 11th November 2024

The Swahili term ‘Boma’ is traditionally known as an enclosure or fence used to protect livestock like cows, sheep, goats and other animals from predators.

It can also act as a general communal space for social interaction and cultural expression.

However, if you are a safari lover you will no doubt have heard about, and possibly experienced the special boma dining experience, an integral part of most safaris. More about that below …

African Boma – Architecture

Although traditional designs vary from region to region, some common features include:

  • Bomas are circular in shape. This practical design represents the continuous cycle of life and symbolises unity as well as community.
  • A boma’s framework is constructed using wooden poles.
  • Not all Bomas have a roof – if they do it is typically a thatched roof.
  • Boma’s have a central fire pit which serves as the focal point for gatherings and is used for cooking, warmth, and storytelling.

African Boma – Cultural Significance

Bomas typically represent the heart and soul of many African communities. In this space traditions come to life and are passed on to the next generation through:

  • Dance & music (African drums & colourful traditional clothing)
  • Storytelling
  • Art & crafts
  • Cuisine

Visiting an African Boma

Should you find yourself visiting a traditional boma during your next visit to Africa, we would like to impart some essential advice to show your respect for local customs and traditions:

  • Please dress modestly and in a culturally sensitive manner. We would like to suggest earth-toned clothing.
  • Please make sure to seek permission before taking photos or videos. Some rituals and performances may be considered sacred and therefore not suitable for photography.
  • Be open to engaging with the local community members, but do so respectfully.
  • Consider supporting the local economy by purchasing handmade crafts and products directly from the artisans.

A boma dinner on safari:

Many lodges in Africa offer so-called open-air boma dinners. This is one way for visitors to get a feel and taste of African culture and cuisine.

This experience is usually held in either a replica boma or in a traditional boma that has been modified to suit the needs of tourists.

Boma dinners are a wonderful way to end an exciting day of game viewing. With the starry African sky and the nocturnal bush noises offering the perfect backdrop, guests can gather around the fire and exchange stories about their exciting wildlife sightings.

No matter which way you chose to experience an African boma, it most certainly is a uniquely exceptional way to learn more about Africa’s deeply rooted traditions – an absolute must when on safari
