Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Parkis Uganda's largest National Park. It measures approximately 4000 square kilometres in size. The Park is situated in north-western Uganda, spreading inland from the shores of Lake Albert, on either side of the Victoria Nile, and up to the Karuma Falls.
Murchison Falls National Park straddles the Ugandan districts of Buliisa, Nwoya, Kiryandongo, and Masindi. The Park is about 300 kilometres by road north-west of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda.Â
At the world famous Murchison Falls, the waters of the Victoria Nile explode through a narrow gorge and cascade down to become a placid river. At this point the waters of the entire Victoria Nile force their way through a small passage within the rocks, and topple below with a thunderous roar, forming a residual water spray that in turn forms a beautiful rainbow.
The view is truly impressive!
Below Murchison Falls the banks of the Victoria Nile River are thronged with hippo, crocodile, waterbuck, and buffalo. The vegetation around Murchison Falls is characterised by savannah, riverine forest and woodland.
Other wildlife to be found in the Murchison Falls National Park includes lion, leopard, elephant, giraffe, hartebeest, oribi, Uganda Kob, chimpanzee, and many bird species.
