Somalisa Camp

Somalisa Camp: Our View
If we had to choose an all round favourite camp in Hwange National Park , then it would be Somalisa Camp and its smaller satellite camp, Somalisa Acacia. This camp has always enjoyed an excellent reputation for the quality of the game viewing in this area and the quality of the guiding. But a huge refurbishment in 2015 elevated it from a simple bush camp into one of the most luxurious camps in Hwange National Park and indeed in Southern Africa.
It is one of 3 camps operated by African Bush Camps (Somalisa Acacia, Somalisa & Somalisa Expeditions Camp) in its own private concession in the Hwange National Park and only these camps are able to do game drives in this area. It is in the eastern section of the park, well away from the busier area around Hwange Main Camp. So even when they go into the main national park on the game drives, it is rarely going to be crowded as there are very few other camps in this area. So Somalisa Camp is perfect for clients looking for an exclusive safari with very few other vehicles at sightings.
Somalisa Camp may be one of the more expensive camps in Hwange but it really does offer everything; luxurious accommodation and facilities, great game viewing, excellent guiding and superb service. We would recommend Somalisa Camp to any client to include in their itinerary if they have the budget for it and if there is availability!

Somalisa Camp: The Details
What we love about the rooms at Somalisa Camp is not just that they are very luxurious and spacious but they also have so much character. Copper sinks and a freestanding copper bath tub add real elegance to the rooms. This is one of the few camps in Hwange National Park to have wood burning stoves in all the rooms - which will be much appreciated in the June – August winter months when it gets very cold indeed. They also have indoor and outdoor showers and a large deck area to sit and admire the view. Most rooms at Somalisa have good views onto the waterhole and the whole rear section of the room has large mesh windows giving them a lovely open air feel. The main lounge and dining area is equally stylish and luxurious and also has great views onto the waterhole. There is also a plunge pool and a boma fire area.
Somalisa Camp is more than just a luxurious camp in the bush though. Offering a fantastic safari experience has always been the main priority of African Bush Camps, who own this camp, and that continues to be the case. The guides here are excellent and they offer both game drives and walking safaris. The game viewing in this area of Hwange is also very good and very exclusive. It is located in a remote area of the park. No other camps are permitted to operate in Somalisa’s own private concession. And even when they go into the main national park you are unlikely to see many other vehicles. There are not any other camps in this area and very few self drivers come to this area. As the dry season progresses and seasonal waterholes dry up, huge numbers of animals are attracted to the waterhole at the camp which is pumped with water all year round. From July – October it is possible to have fantastic game viewing without even leaving camp!
