Xigera: Our View

Xigera, the fourth, and latest, African property to join The Red Carnation Hotel Collection, is a wonderful and very luxurious tented camp in a largely flooded area on the western edge of the Moremi Game Reserve, overlooking the lush floodplains of the Okavango Delta.

The camp can only be reached by light aircraft, and if the winter water levels are high, a mokoro (dug-out canoe) and/or a boat is used to transfer guests from the airstrip to the camp.

Xigera is deeply rooted within the Okavango Delta’s breathtaking landscape of seasonal floodplains and riverine forests, tawny grasslands and verdant papyrus wetlands. Guest here can therefore enjoy remarkable experiences both on land and on the water. All activities are carefully tailored to guests’ specific interests and timings, from exploring the bush on a thrilling photographic game drive, or on foot with one of the very knowledgeable and wonderful guides, to discovering the Okavango’s most remote waterways by boat, or drifting gently across serene lagoons in a glass-bottom mokoro and enjoying a sundowner at the end of the day.

The cuisine at Xigera is equally special and offers comforting signature dishes created by the founder, Beatrice Tollman, as well as African-inspired menus crafted by the talented chefs, with a focus on healthy, nutritious choices.

To complete the luxury safari experience Xigera also offers a spa with an extensive treatment menu as well as a gym.

The 12 luxurious suites lie hidden amid a canopy of magnificent indigenous trees, each individually designed. For multi-generational safari travellers, there is the impressive two-bedroom Family Suite.

Xigera: The Details

Each of Xigera’s twelve  guest suites is raised on stilts and takes full advantage of its  remarkable location, cocooned by indigenous forests and with vistas of the seasonal floodplains that are teaming with wildlife. The suites are spread across two islands to retain the aura of wilderness and ensure privacy and peacefulness for guests. The furnishings in each suite are equisite, featuring adjoining bathrooms with hot and cold running water and flush toilets, indoor and outdoor showers. Facilities at Xigera also include a plunge pool overlooking the floodplain and nearby waterhole. All suites are air-conditioned, with tinted glass windows to reduce energy usage and ensure a comfortable temperature. Built with sustainability in mind, Xigera is solar-powered.

Although both water and land-based activities are offered at Xigera, land-based activities may not be offered if water levels are too high. Boat trips are also available. The land-based activities use open 4x4 Land Rovers, allowing guests to get close to the wildlife on the plains. Walking safaris are available and bird watching in the area is excellent. There is a good chance of sighting lion and leopard along with their plains game prey including the rare Sitatunga marsh antelope.

For a truly immersive discovery of the Okavango Delta, Xigera offers the Baobab Treehouse experience. This remarkable tree house is situated one kilometre away from the lodge, with a guide stationed close by. Here, amid the seclusion of this sculptural treehouse you will experience Africa at its most raw, and mostextraordinary.

Xigera’s extraordinary collection of pan-African art and design, created by a roster of 80 of Africa’s most globally acclaimed designers is another interesting fact that sets this luxury lodge apart from other high end lodges in the Okavango Delta. It is a collection that is bold in vision and groundbreaking in its scope, the first of its kind on the continent.

Xigera is booked on an all inclusive basis with accommodation, meals and drinks (no premium brands), activities and laundry
